A community of drop-ins and allied members throughout Toronto
On March 13th, the Government of Ontario announced their decision to end provincial funding for Supervised Consumption Sites (SCSs) that will result in their forced closure by June 13, 2026. This is devastating. SCSs play a critical role in our coordinated response to the ongoing toxic drug crisis.
This policy decision deeply impacts the drop-in community, both in the work we do and the communities we belong to. Drop-ins have already felt the rippling impacts of the forced closures in 2025, seeing a significant increase in overdoses in our drop-in programs across Toronto. These newly announced forced closures will only press more people to use in unsafe spaces across the City and place a heightened service use need on Toronto’s unfunded KMOPS and StreetHealth sites.
As we collectively navigate the grief of this news and advocate for the well-being and rights of our community, TDIN has put together some background information, community resources, and advocacy tools that may support how we as a community move through the harsh reality of these changes, together.
People who use drugs are PEOPLE and deserving of love, compassion, support, joy, connection, and safety. The forced closure of Supervised Consumption Sites goes against evidence-based research from community, public health authorities, and social policy recommendations in relation to substance use. Harm reduction is health care and we champion for everyone in our city to have access to the care and sense of belonging they need.
We love you. We see you. We stand with you.
